Hong Kong Avenue of Comic Stars (Phase Four) Showcases Hong Kong comics inheritance and stardom among generations Featuring diverse styles of comics from different eras
The Hong Kong Avenue of Comic Stars ("the Avenue") located at Kowloon Park in Tsim Sha Tsui, is the world's first themed walkway dedicated to comics. Featuring colourful statues of famous local comics characters and bronze handprints of their creators, the Avenue aims to promote Hong Kong’s comics culture to both local and overseas visitors. Since the first phase launched in 2012, the Avenue has continuously introduced new contents, providing visitors with a unique cultural and creative experience that has been well-received by locals and tourists alike over the years. The Hong Kong Comics and Animation Federation ("HKCAF"), with the funding of the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (“CCIDA”), has launched the Phase Four of the Avenue at its original site, with the theme "inheritance”. In addition to retaining some statues of comics characters from the first three phases, more than 40 new statues created by local comics artists have been set up. Two new stairways with oil paintings depicting comics characters from different eras are located at the Avenue’s entrance. Along with an art display wall and exhibition panels, the Avenue introduces the works and creative careers of over a hundred Hong Kong comics artists, making it the largest cultural landmark for Hong Kong comics to date.
The opening ceremony of the Phase Four of the Avenue was held today (6 November 2024) at Kowloon Park in Tsim Sha Tsui. HKCAF was honoured to have Ms. Vivian SUM Fong-kwang, JP, Permanent Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, as the Guest-of-Honour to deliver a speech. She was joined by Dr. Tony WONG, Chairman of HKCAF, Mr. Victor TSANG Chiu-hok, JP, Commissioner for Cultural and Creative Industries, Ms. Eva TAM Mei-yee, Deputy Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mrs. Lowell CHO LAI Suk-ha, Assistant Commissioner for Cultural and Creative Industries and Mr. Edward YU Kin-keung, JP, Chairman of Yau Tsim Mong District Council to officiate at the opening ceremony. In addition, several Hong Kong comics artists shared their experiences and licensing opportunities from this cross-media collaboration at the opening ceremony.
Ms. Vivian SUM Fong-kwang, JP, Permanent Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, expressed full support for HKCAF to promote the Hong Kong’s animation and comics industry. She noted that the Avenue has long been a symbol of the development and inheritance of Hong Kong's comics industry. Together with the AniCom Sports Park opened recently at the Wan Chai Temporary Promenade, the two locations formed landmarks for animation and comics on both sides of Victoria Harbour. She hoped that visitors could learn more about the development and achievements of Hong Kong's comics industry through this initiative.
Dr. Tony WONG, Chairman of HKCAF said during the opening ceremony, “Hong Kong comics industry has been a platform for nurturing great artists whose works became classic over the years, having a significant influence in the Chinese community across the world. Since its launch in 2012, the Avenue has become an iconic place that has passed on Hong Kong comics culture from generation to generation for over a decade. This year, the Avenue (Phase Four) has added several Hong Kong’s comics statues which feature interesting scenes. We hope that both local and overseas visitors can find collective memories and something in common with the various comics characters from different eras, and enjoy delightful new experiences.”
In recent years, the Hong Kong comics industry has come to a stage of heralding the future from the past. A large number of emerging comics artists have injected new elements into their creative works, resulting in a flourishing scene in the industry. With the theme ‘inheritance”, the Avenue highlights the outstanding achievements and contributions of various Hong Kong comics artists and also introduces artists from different eras and newcomers at various exhibition areas, making it the largest Hong Kong comics cultural landmark to date. The exciting elements added in the phase four of the Avenue include:
The number of large statues at the “Comic Gateway” entrance has increased from 32 to a new total of 40, featuring Hong Kong comics characters from different eras. Additionally, an entrance has been added, along with comics murals next to the two staircases, presenting a new image to the public.
The “Comic Avenue”, which is the project’s focus, showcases painted statues of local comics characters and the bronze handprints of their creators. 4 new comics characters have been added, increasing the total number of statues from 32 to 36. QR codes powered by AR technology have been attached next to each statue that allows visitors to take selfies with the 3D virtual models of the comics characters onto real world place, creating a more interactive experience.
The "Comic Wall" features an exhibition area approximately 50 meters long, showcasing the works and comics characters of 30 local comics artists in an artistic manner, which is definitely a trendy photo spot.
A display area features other exhibits, primarily introducing the history and significant events of Hong Kong comics, achievements, the unique comics production process in Hong Kong, and also the latest developments in the industry.
The phase four of the Avenue has been opened for free visits, with operating hours from 5:00 AM to midnight. The public is welcome to take photos with the comics characters. For more details about the "Hong Kong Avenue of Comic Stars”, please visit the website www.comicavenue.hk.
